To qualify, your trip must be delayed for at least six hours due to specific reasons like bad weather or lost travel documents. Car rental loss and damage insurance
When you rent a car and pay with your Amex Platinum Card, your travel insurance can cover damages or theft. You should decline the rental agency’s collision damage coverage. This benefit covers up to $75,000 for damage or theft. It also includes some coverage for accidental death, injury, and personal property in the car.

We generally recommend exploring other insurance options because you can get better coverage for the same price. Let’s look at an example to compare the cost and coverage of American Express travel insurance with other options.
American Express Gold- $273
While many aspects of this plan are similar to others, it’s essential to note that it only provides up to $25,000 in emergency medical coverage. This amount may be insufficient, especially for international trips or cruises, where I recommend having at least $100,000 in coverage.
Additionally, this plan doesn’t offer an option for Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) coverage, which is a valuable upgrade for many travelers. Most companies provide CFAR upgrades on at least one plan, but American Express doesn’t offer this coverage.
Travel Insured Worldwide Trip Protector– $228
This plan offers coverage that is comparable to others, with a medical limit of $100,000, which is generally sufficient for most trips. Moreover, you have the option to upgrade with Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) coverage.
Trawick Safe Travels Voyager– $241
This plan offers coverage similar to others but has a higher medical limit of $250,000, which is generally more than enough for most trips. Additionally, you can choose to upgrade with Cancel For Any Reason coverage. The cost of all these plans is slightly more than 5% of your trip cost, which is in the typical range for travel insurance, usually ranging from 4% to 10% of the trip cost.

Filing a claim for Amex Platinum Card travel insurance is a straightforward process. Here are the steps to follow:
